Jan. 1-8    Lighting the Sulu:  Lanterns of San Fernando, a grand display of specially designed lanterns with ingenious craftsmanship and technology, Cultural Center of the Philippines, Front Lawn and Main Ramp, Roxas Blvd.  Free.

Jan. 3-16   Ati-Atihan Festival, Kalibo, Aklan, an annual celebration in honor of the Santo Nino. Participants with soot on their faces and wearing colorful costumes make merry and dance in the streets to drumbeats.

Jan. 4, 11, 18, 25     Filipiniana Sunsets at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).  Folkloric dance and music presentations by folk dance groups that showcase the rich cultural heritage and traditions of the Philippines, with the Manila Bay sunset as background, Cultural Center of the Philippines North Promenade, 6-7 pm.  Free

Jan. 7    Ohana Day:  Filipino Culture,  Cultural Festival in Lihue at Kauai Museum to celebrate the cultures of multicultural plantation heritage, sponsored by the museum and the St. Raphael Catholic Club, 10 am – 1 pm, Kauai Museum, 4428 Rice Street, Lihue, HI 96766.  Free or discounted admission.

Jan. 21    2nd Annual Kulinarya, A Filipino Culinary Showdown, Saturday, 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm; 4:00 pm: Amateur Division cook-off 6:00 pm: Professional Division Cook-off 7:45 pm, at Carnelian by the Bay Restaurant,  One Ferry Plaza, San Francisco, California, sponsored by the Philippine Consulate General, Philippine Department of Tourism, Philippine Department of Trade and Industry and Filipino American Arts Exposition. Free admission. Limited seats available.
